Laparoscopic
Removal and Reconstruction of Kidney
(NEPHRECTOMY AND
PYELOPLASTY)
Removal and reconstruction of the kidney for
cancerous and benign lesions is now possible using laparoscopic
techniques. Numerous articles have shown the improved outcomes
with minimally-invasive surgery. The patients require less pain
medications, have a shorter hospital stay, better cosmetic
results, and are back to normal activities much quicker than
with conventional open surgery. Furthermore, cancer control
rates with the laparoscopic technique are the same as that with
conventional open surgery.
Here you see, Dr. Razdan performing a complex kidney surgery
through three small laparoscopic ports. A voice- activated robot
controls the camera, allowing the surgeon to do an essentially
“one man procedure”. The patient was eating within 5 hours of
surgery and left the hospital the next morning. He was back to
normal activities within a week.
